Bacteriostatic is not sterilising

The distinction matters and is frequently blurred. A bacteriostatic agent inhibits growth; it does not sterilise a solution or undo contamination that has already been introduced. A vial entered repeatedly with a used needle can still become contaminated - the benzyl alcohol slows the process, it does not prevent it. This is why a previously clear solution turning cloudy in storage is treated as a discard rather than a puzzle.

Why not sterile water

Sterile water contains no preservative. It is appropriate where a vial will be reconstituted and consumed in a single use, and inappropriate where the solution will be stored and entered again. Since most research reconstitution produces a working solution used across a period, the bacteriostatic version is the one protocols specify.

Why not distilled or tap water

Distilled water is purified but not sterile and carries no preservative. Tap water carries minerals, chlorine compounds and microorganisms, any of which can interact with the material or introduce contamination. Neither is a substitute, and substituting them changes the conditions the compound was characterised under.

Practical handling

  • Add diluent slowly down the vial wall rather than directly onto the lyophilized cake.
  • Roll or swirl to mix. Do not shake - agitation can drive aggregation.
  • Store the reconstituted solution cold and dark, and minimise the number of entries.
  • Bacteriostatic water itself has a working life once opened; it is not indefinitely stable either.
